What actually happens in your house when the grid drops
The order things fail in, why the second hour is worse than the first, and what a battery changes about the sequence.
Most people picture an outage as the lights going off. The lights are the least of it. Here is the sequence a Houston house actually runs through.
Minute zero
Lights, air conditioning, refrigerator, internet, garage door opener, and — in most newer homes — the security system's ability to phone out all stop at once. The alarm panel and the router usually have small batteries that carry them for a while; nothing else does.
The first hour
Nobody panics in the first hour. The fridge is still cold. The house is still whatever temperature it was. Phones are charged. This is the hour where an outage feels like an inconvenience.
Hours two through six
In August, the inside of a Houston house climbs fast once the air conditioning stops — attic heat pushes down and there is nothing to fight it. In a January freeze it moves the other direction, and the bigger risk arrives with it: pipes.
The refrigerator holds roughly four hours if you keep the door shut. A full freezer holds closer to two days; a half-empty one, about one.
If anyone in the house depends on powered medical equipment — an oxygen concentrator, a CPAP, a mobility lift — this is the window where an outage stops being about comfort.
Day two
Now it is food loss, cold showers, no way to work, and a phone charged off a car. If a storm took out roads too, stores and gas stations near you are dark for the same reason your house is.
What a battery changes
The Duracell system we install sits behind the main service panel and backs the whole thing. There is no critical-loads subpanel and no list of circuits to nominate, so the sequence above does not get split into the parts that survive and the parts that do not — the house simply keeps running.
What is finite is time, not scope. A battery holds a set amount of energy, and how far that goes depends entirely on what the house is doing with it. Idling on the fridge, the internet and some lights, it lasts a long while. Running central air through an August afternoon, it goes considerably faster. The honest framing: a battery turns a two-day emergency into a two-day inconvenience, without a generator to fuel, start, or listen to.
The question worth asking
Because scope is settled, the only question left is duration: how long does this house need to carry itself, and what is it running while it does?
Everything else — usable capacity, whether one battery or two — falls out of that answer, and the answer comes off your bill and your habits rather than a wish list. Any installer who starts with the hardware is selling backwards.
