Battery or generator: an honest comparison
Where a standby generator genuinely wins, where a battery does, and the maintenance question nobody brings up at the sales table.

Where a standby generator wins
Long outages. A natural-gas standby unit runs as long as the gas keeps flowing. A battery runs until it is empty. If your worst case is four days without power and you want the house running the entire time, a generator is the honest answer.
Nothing to ration. Both back the whole panel, but a generator gives you no reason to think about consumption. On a battery, running two air conditioners is possible and expensive in hours — you are spending a finite tank, and on day two you notice.
Where a battery wins
It is already on when the power goes out. Transfer is fast enough that most people notice only a flicker. A standby generator takes several seconds to sense, start, and transfer — long enough for every clock in the house to reset and every desktop to reboot.
No fuel, no engine, no noise. Nothing to start monthly, no oil to change, no exercise cycle running in your side yard on a Sunday morning, nothing your neighbours can hear at 2am.
It works on ordinary days. This is the part that gets skipped. A battery is a piece of energy equipment that participates in your electricity plan year-round. A generator does nothing at all until the grid fails.
No combustion. No exhaust, no carbon-monoxide siting rules, nothing to keep clear of windows.
The maintenance question
Ask any generator salesperson what the service schedule looks like in year five, and what it costs. It is a real number, it recurs, and it is usually absent from the first conversation. Batteries have their own long-term question — warranty terms and capacity fade — and that is a fair thing to hold us to in the same way.
How we would decide in your house
- Decide your worst realistic outage. A summer thunderstorm afternoon is a different machine than a February freeze that lasts three days.
- Read your real usage. Off the bill, not off a table — it is what turns hours into kilowatt-hours.
- Then size hardware. Not before.
If step 1 comes back "three days, running everything, and I do not want to think about it," you want a generator, and we will say so. If it comes back "carry the house through the outages we actually get, and I never want to change oil in my side yard," that is a battery, and that is most of the houses we walk into.
